3dsmax - annoyances no. 1

I’m not usually one of those people who resists change in computer software, but I do when ‘new’ is both less intuitive and also slower. So this post is really just a reminder to myself of what to do to revert the 3dsmax select dialog to the old style one, and the material/map browser (within the material editor) as well. Enjoy!

select objects

C: > Users > *username* > AppData > Local > Autodesk > 3dsMax(Design) > 2013 - 64bit > ENU > en-US > defaults > MAX.vray > Currentdefaults.ini

[Scene Explorer]
SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=0

(If you aren’t using vray then the path will be slightly different)

material map browser

C: > Users > *username* > AppData > Local > Autodesk > 3dsMax(Design) > 2013 - 64bit > ENU > plugcfg_ln > SME.ini

UseOldMtlBrowser=1

EDIT:

And another thing while I’m at it. I prefer having the file menu visible rather than just as an icon, luckily this is very easy to do, just customize your UI, click the menus tab and drag the file menu back where it should be like this:

Capture

Thanks to Pixela I think it was who originally helped me with this!

  1. Thanks for share this tips, it’s make 3ds max much faster

  2. Right there with you man! I’ve created this exact post on my own blog before, and frequently struggle with the “right” way to teach people how to use max when they introduce new features that aren’t (in my opinion) improvements. Also loved it when they split max into regular and design versions (Viz flashbacks!) and there were a dozen copies of CurrentDefaults.ini on every system! Thanks for posting and letting us all know we’re not lone ;-)

  3. Peter, I´ve found other way to do this:
    You can revert to the old Browser if you want.
    Close 3ds Max/Design
    Search for the SME.ini (in XP64, C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2011 - 64bit\enu\plugcfg), and set:

    Code:
    ShowMtlBrowser=0UseOldMtlBrowser=1

    P.S.: In Widows7 the path differ: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\2012 - 64bit\enu\plugcfg\SME.ini
    Hope it can help, thanks!

  4. I have to agree. These are the first two things I do on a fresh installation. Really just useless innovations!

  5. Hi Peter,
    Thanks for this incredible tip! I was regretting the old dialogs a lot (mainly for their fast response!)
    There really are some updates that make this software very slow… it’s really annoying

  6. The method to select objects in max is so nerve-racking and old-school. As a former Maya user i am using the “Outliner” script from PJanssen which is great. Sometimes a bit buggy but still better than the selection floater thing.

  7. Outliner is great, may give it another go

    Here it is if anyone is interested: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/outliner

  8. Thanks Peter! :)

  9. Anyone know what to change in Max2011 for the map browser? There is no SME.ini

  10. Life-saver. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who looked at these updated dialogues and asked “…… why!?!”

  11. I would like to return the dropdown menus like the 3dsMax 2009.
    I know you have to, but do not remember how.

  12. why you did that???
    the new browser is fast and have many positive point for mapping ! but unfortunately it’s work perfect with SlateMaterialEditor(SME) so if you want speed in new mat/map browser i just recommend disable the teapot button in bottom left corner of SME
    so everytime you open mat browser max wont render all map and material in you brower(including library and scene Mat/Map) then you have mush faster mat browser even from old one.
    it also lead you to have better library organizing with better name for quick reach to what you want but if you don’t have a good organized library you can just go back and enable that button again and wait for ending mat rendering.
    hope Autodesk add this button to browser instead of SME .
